Recently a female police officer from Maharastra wrote a poem. It was published in the internal Newsletters of Mumbai Police. The poem is in Marathi, but its Hindi and English version are available at many places. In her poem she did not site any particular community. But it sites her anger for being helpless in controlling the riot spread during Azad Maidan Protest during August last year. Her anger was because, if the Police would have acted with diligence, the molestation of few women police would have been avoided and destruction of Amar Jyoti Jawan monument could also be avoided.
Here I am reproducing the Poem written by Sujata Patil.
We failed to understand one simple thing
Lathi in hand, Pistol on our waist
Cars were burning, eyes looked bloodshot
If we had hit them, they too would have been burnt.
But we failed to understand one simple thing
Their purpose was strong,
And shame was being forced upon us.
With evidence of every moral edifice crumbling,
We did not need any clues to see what's Wrong
But, we failed to one simple thing,
The sheer brazenness to touch Amar Jawan Jyoti
If we had cut those hands, who'd remember any way ?
But, we failed to understand one simple thing.
They forgot Ramzan, they forgot humanity
We would have taught each of them a lesson.
Why did we need to get scared ?
We had a lathi in our hand too.
But, we failed to understand one simple thing
The attack was in full public view
While people were spectators.
If we had played Bullets of fire
We need not have to burn Ravan just during Navaratri
We would celebrate Diwali and Ramzan together.
But, we failed to understand one simple thing
We feed the snakes that come back to spread venom
And we talk about brotherhood ?
The dreams of the Amar Jawan
amid the fear of common men
We failed to understand one simple thing
Lathi in hand, pistol on our waist.
Just by going through this poem, I could not understand how this poem is communal ? Clearly she mentioned whom she considers to be traitors, "Those forgot Ramzan, forgot Humanity". But to the champions of secular fellows, this is offensive and communal.
Now if this is targeting one particular community, as said by Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhatt and other such champions, they are accepting the following -
1. Those who destroyed Amar jawan Jyoti were true followers of that community
2. Those who molested women were true followers of that community
3. The way they stage their protest that day, is what all people of that community want
If these three statements are true, then surely this is a Communal Writing. And those who thinks these are not the qualities of all the followers of that community, should not feel it offensive at all.
And they should read one line in between too, " We need not have to burn Ravan only during Navaratri, and would celebrate Diwali and Ramzan together. "
Who deny this sentence ? Dont we want to celebrate both Diwali and Ramzan together ? Do all the people of one community want to celebrate just their festival and to scrap festival of the other (As we just saw few days back, one MLA of that community demanded cancellation of Ram Navami celebration at Hyderabad). If this is not true, why do they feel this poem is communal ?
